Prerequisites

FAQ

No.

This course is intended for experienced divers who already possess advanced diving skills and significant open water experience.

A minimum of 100 logged dives is required before enrolment.

The purpose of the course is not to encourage unnecessary solo diving. The objective is to develop divers who can safely manage themselves when effectively operating independently and who understand the responsibilities associated with self-reliant diving.

No.

SDI standards specifically require a completely independent redundant breathing system. A traditional octopus regulator does not meet the course requirements.

Most divers use either:

  • a pony cylinder system
  • independent doubles
  • twin cylinders with isolation manifold

The configuration should provide a completely independent breathing supply capable of supporting an emergency ascent.

Solo diving requires strong situational awareness, buoyancy control, gas management, navigation skills, and sound judgement. The prerequisite experience helps ensure candidates already possess a high level of diving competency before beginning self-reliance training.
